He is, in a sense, delusional. But he is to be a sympathetic character, not just an object of pity or ridicule.
His delusionary state- and his current cirumstance in life (the weird guy who sits and scribbles all day)- can be traced back to his childhood traumas. His mother was bi-polar, and when she wasn't showering him with affection and accolades- she was despondent and paranoid. Our Artist didn't have many social experiences growing up as his mothers sickness made her home-school and shelter him.
He basically grew up as the fat kid, who didn't think he was fat, because his mother always told him how beautiful he was. But he wasn't fat, just a really bad wanna-be artist. His mother seemed to try and make up for her own deficiencies and depressions by propping her son up with unrealilstic and unattainable goals. .... .... He was always a little strange, but it wasn't until his mothers death that he became "Sketch Man".
